Tanzanite is the trade name given by Tiffany and company to a blue mineral onsite variety with chemical composition of Calcium Aluminium Silicate Ca2Al3(Si04)3 (OHl). Somewhere in the universe in East Africa the Republic of Tanzania truly blessed with the vast of natural heritage abundant of minerals of almost all kinds but one emerged at the top of the list and that is Tanzanite. The name Tanzanite was given  because the only known Tanzanite  deposits of commercial importance is found in Tanzania, Manyara region in the district of Mirerani near the foot hills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak of Africa.

Its formation makes it one of the rarest gemstones of the world as it is believed that Tanzanite deposits happened as a result of tectonic plates activities and intense heat that formed Mount Kilimanjaro. This unique condition for its formation, makes Tanzanite rare 1,000 times more than diamonds. Most Tanzanite are heat treated stones that gives it a violet blue colour due to presence of vanadium. Its hardness measures 6-7 on Mhs scale of hardness. Tanzanite can easily be confused with Sapphire due to it’s close look alike in colour. Tanzanite violet blue purple colour makes it outstanding and more beautiful when cut and polished. The most common methods used to separate  Tanzanite  from Sapphire is by Interference figure, Refractive Index and Specific Gravity.
